snipes

Spent all day afield, it was pretty nice. Threw out some dekes this morning in a flooded flat and was covered up 15 minutes before legal with pins and GWT, when shooting time rolled around it was deserted, didn't see any other ducks without oxygen masks this morning.

Took a nap, ate lunch and met Drundel and a guy from another site and we walked up some snipe. Birds were shootable, but very few easy shots. They were all concentrated at one end of the field, it was amazing when we got toward that corner to see birds constantly boiling out of the ground. Ended the day with half limits, good day, great exercise, good company, good bird dog, bout time to crack a lone star and say...ah.

They are delicious - very rich meat, almost like a sweet dove. I breast them out and try to one piece boneless filet them, stuff some pinapple in the middle, wrap with bacon, grill, and stab anyone with a fork who tries to get them off my plate.

My son and I did the same thing last week after a duck hunt.

Here's a picture of his first every snipe hunt.

I ain't telling, more than one though.

Lead, dove, snipe, sandhill, etc. are migratory birds, but not waterfowl.

We as a group hovered around my average on those birds this year - 2 per box. Its fun to shoot the gun that much, I just wish I would connect more often on those 45 yard corkscrewing quartering shots. Tough stuff.

I like to shoot hot lead 7's or 8's. The other guy in the picture didn't know you could use lead and was shooting steel 6's, and it decreased his hit rate by a lot because he needed more lead (that one's pronounced leed).
