Cool Today We Were Pioneers

Ended up hunting a reservoir on the Ranch that was recently drawn down to make it more huntable. We were "volunteered" to be the guinea pigs and it paid off.

Ag, Thib, Drundie, and I hunted in two small patches of cattail grass surrounded by some groceries teeming with seeds. Wind was a factor as was cover but we managed to shoot 12, which I believe was top bird count for the day so I think we did ok. We should have had many more, but a combo of huntig 25 yards apart and trying to allow everyone a shot on numerous occasions ended up costing us a shot alltogher or shooting at inoportune times. We ended up firing 100 rounds between the 4 of us!!

Fun time though. A different hunt but fun!

yea thats it, give um hell

I saw the two little pods of cat tails they hid behind, for them to shoot anything besides coots and camorants is pretty amazing in itself..

That includes all ducks for this season. We are at 3.4 birds/hunter which includes teal season in that average. We shot 133 teal during teal season for a 3.3 birds/hunter average.

If we end up the season with 3.4 as the ratio we will have over 550 birds. We are sitting at about 3.8 hunters/hunt.

so yall basically kill almost a 1/4 of your ducks during teal season(damn good teal season btw), I'm not trying to be a smart ass it just seems like in the past yall have had more birds.

Right now we've had 6 hunts out of our blind and have harvested 104 birds. 3 of which came straight from hollywood, grinning the whole way by

Seeing as how we are only what 16 days into a 74 day season we could very well eclipse 550. I don't know about you dude, but anything over a 3bph average is pretty damn good.

But maybe my expectations are a little different. I guess maybe I trade half a bird per hunter for getting up at 4:30-4:45 and riding to my blind on an atv without fear of someone setting up on top of me or cutting me off... who knows.

They all had a glass of the DU innaugural Cabernet upon repairing to the camp men's club for cigars after the day's quarry had been left in the capable hands of " Jones ", head duck plucker.

More like we raised our cups of re-warmed Cafe Du Monde as we ate breakfast tacos and tamales from Molly the tamale lady. We then breasted our ducks on the tailgate of my truck as the cats circled the wagons waiting for a morsel of duck guts...
