Matagorda fun

Man for those who didn't come down ya'll have missed a good time. We sat out this evening and grilled all sorts of goodies from frog legs to redfish to kabobs, to Drundel's Lucky Charms Trout. Some pitched washers, everyone drank beer and it was downright pleasant. TM's condo is about 20' behind the sand dunes so you can walk right over to the beach. It was real nice. We even had a Yeti sighting.

Three boats fished today with two fishing East and one West. The two boats that went east caught a couple trout and a couple reds. Drake224, Drundel, Toledo Mike and one more went West and found some redfish, they ended up with 7 reds 2 trout and a flounder. Drake said he'd have had an easy boat limit of reds if he had some help. Drundel actually did catch a fish. Must have been one of those fish that rides the short bus to school, but it was a fish nonetheless.

Gotta get to bed, we are hitting it early in the morning.

Conditions were tough this morning, 25-30 mph wind. Rough crossing the bay, especially for the guys in the aluminum boats.

We ended up with 20 trout and a red. Cbass, ETMD and I walked into a bunch of fish early and had a blast with an abundance of 18-19" reds. Cbass strung a couple trout and I lost two good fish, I was snakebit for a couple hours, lost fish after fish. We went back to the boats for a drink and Drake224 was on his way back to his boat to get a drink when he walked into a slick and some trout. So we baled out to join him and everyone caught a bunch of trout, just had a lot of undersized fish. Scratched out some keepers and headed home.

Got back just in time to enjoy some awsome fried fish. Ol Medulla can fry fish, I'm telling you. Maybe it was from being hungry cause we had just got off the water, maybe it was because I didn't have to mess with cooking it myself, whatever it was that was the best fish I have had in a long time. We put a hurting on it.

We are going to make a quick trip in the morning since they have to be out of the condo by noon.

Hey now, lets hear more about Drundel's Lucky Charms Trout. Gonna make up some of them tomorrow, can trust Dallas people to cook reds so I'm bringing some just in case...

Boys I'll add more later, I'm really tired and want a shower, but man oh man it was a blast!

How were the crowds CD? Sure wish I could've joined ya'll, but the wife was sure pleased I stayed home. Looks like ya'll had a good time!

Atleast I made the most of it and ran jugs close to home over the weekend... and finally put a big op in the boat! Put a 40 pounder in the boat, plus another yeller at 9.5, and around 25 or 30 blues with the biggest only about 5 lbs.

There were no crowds. Matagorda was like a regular slow weekend. Lots of folks on the beach but nowhere near like a normal holiday weekend. The bay was quiet. On sunday we might have seen, maybe 20 boats, if that. We fished for hours before anyone even came in within sight of us. I think we had 2 boats fish within sight of us all day, unfortunately when we were catching trout they both decided to come fish within 50 yds of us. The jakelegs waded right in on us. It didn't last long, though.

It was real quiet overall, I guess the constant wind the week before and the weather report kept a lot of folks at home.

I got to meet some real good guys this weekend. I met the Yeti, Diehardducker, Medulla, gigem05, and Jager, all super nice guys and I am glad I got to meet them.

Rebsbud, Mrs. Kevorkian (Mrs. Rebsbud), East Texas Mud Duck, Mrs ETMD, ETMD's boys, Toledo Mike, Cbass, Drundel, Drake224, Jager's womens( he had two drive up from the Valley, something about needing Jager's kabob) and TM's parole officer were also all in attendance. Pretty good crew.

I think a few innocent cases of beer were killed, I know enough food to feed an army was prepared and the locals were terrorized by Toledo Mike. Poor girls will never be the same.

The only thing safe from that crew was the fish.

Yup, fought the wind and the trailer all weekend. We caught some decent fish Saturday and the boys put an absolute ass whuppin on the flounder yesterday (two limits). Then got up this morning and it was DEAD CALM. There were no crowds to speak of all weekend, like MaTA, a normal high wind weekend, but today was like a WEEKDAY. There were maybe ten trailers at Bastrop Marina. But we got the "pearl" out of the slip and up on her newly rebuilt trailer (new axle, springs rollers, pretty much everything but the frame).

Sure glad to hear y'all did some good!

All in all, Mrs. Rebsbud and myself had a blast. She said she could have done without the window breaking, and I could have done with a little less wind, but everything else was great. It was good to meet some more 'fugers, as always. I got to meet Drake 224, Jager, CBass, Txblklabman, giggem05, Medulla, DieHardDucker, WetnCold, and BenelliDave for the first time and got to see some of the old gang of Coastal Ducks & family, Toledo Mike, EastTxMudDuck & family and Drundel. I think that is everyone, besides the special guest who appeared. Sure was disappointed when it wasn't Leeann Rimes. I took the white boots back and exchanged them for a couple SheDogs.

I want to say a special thanks to Toledo Mike for setting up the condo and taking care of all those arrangements.

Also, special thanks to Medulla for bringing his boat along and hauling me around. Plus thanks for the great breakfast tacos and wonderful fried fish. I hate catfish usually, but not this he cooked. He fried it light gold, just like it should be. Your a great cook, for sure. Sorry I didn't get to say so long this morning.

And a super special thanks to Ali, Dyer and Doug for taking care of Sherri through her accident. Once again, when bad things happen, fellow 'fugers came through and compassionately took care of business. I can't thank ya'll enough.

We hope to see all ya'll again soon.

Had a blast this weekend.

Drake picked up me about 3:45 Sat. morning and we ran down to riverbend and picked up TM and David and headedout to the south shore. We got to the spot, geared up and we headed to the right while TM and Davided headed left. It took us about 20 minutes before Drake found a school but once he did we were catching reds just about everyother cast. We waved TM and David in and they caught some on the way. TM boxed one and Drake got one of two. Once the school left we kinda worked out way to the boat and on the way back I picked up a 19" trout. After lunch (really 10:30 snack) we started again and I went left with drake and TM and david went right, I missed a strike and Drake caught a nice 25" red and a rat. I stayed out there while they worked back left and got in a school where they put about 5 more on the stringer. Not a bad day, we ended up with 7 reds, two trout, and a flounder.

The next day it was hella rough on the way across the bay, we were the last boat getting there and we started where we had caught the reds the day before but to no luck. CD, Cbass, and ETMD, were in a pocket and picked up some keepers while drake was working and found a big school of trout. We saw him hook up 3 times in a row and it was a full run to join him. CD was first and hooked up pretty soon and in a bit there were about 7 guys fishing in a line all catching fish. That school lasted a good 30 min or so. After that it was pretty much over. The total that day was 20 trout and 1 red.

Sat. afternoon we all met at the condo after the fishing and were in store for some good food. gigem05 was cooking froglegs, redfish on the halfshell, and some links. I made some trout and flounder and jager brought some rice and a beef dish, not sure who made the meatballs but we all had plenty to eat.

Sun. medulla cooked fried catfish and trout and rebsbud brought some jambalaya that were both outstanding. Loosing weight was not an option this weekend.

It was great to meet new people, gigem05, jager, and hot'n'cold. Thanks to all who brought food and who helped put all this together and all those who brought boats.

It was indeed a great time. I really enjoyed putting names, faces and the refuge handles together. I met several new guys this weekend and was able to visit with some guys I have met before. It was a blast to fish with Toledo Mike his buddy David and Brad. We really had a good time Saturday without many boats around. David and Brad had a rough time catching legal reds but did catch a bunch of rat reds. TM and myself did alright on the bigger fish. It's always nice to see people have success in the salt when they don't have much experience in that environment. Wade fishing for the first time (or when you don't do it often) can be intimidating and the guys handled it like old pros. We were catching reds and ole TM just up and left, sleeping of the rest of the trip. We caught reds from 11:30 till about 3:30 fairly steady. For a while we were hooked up two at a time, a blast for sure.

Sunday the water was a little deeper and I couldn't locate the reds. I figured they moved up into the marsh and indeed Coastal Ducks and crew did find em in there just couldn't land the keepers. I waded deeper since I couldn't locate the reds and ran into the trout. Wet'n'cold and myself were close to the school and the other guys came that direction and we fished the trout steady for quite a while. It was good to see everyone catching fish. Catching dink trout is a blast especially when the action is fast like it was, I prolly let some 15" trout go before I decided to measure the first one and it was indeed legal. Too bad more keepers weren't strung but as long as everyone has fun, that's what its really about anyhow! Coastals stringer even got hit by a shark, just to keep things interesting for the non salts among us .

All in all a really good time. I enjoyed meeting and visiting with all of you, and look forward to the next get together.

Ronnie, I hope your wifes surgery goes without a hitch, take care.

Special thanks to all the cooks, the guys who cleaned up, and to TM for setting up the house for everyone. It sure was in a great location.

TM, I also feel bad that you were left on Sunday. We had no idea you were still asleep and thought you had left with the other guys. Didn't know you had overslept and intended to go until we got back. I felt bad about that for you and David. Anyhow, we'll make sure that doesn't happen to anyone next time.

It was great to meet all of you guys ... and gals.

Gigem05, thanks for the boat ride on sunday morning. That Alweld is a beast. It took that pounding across west bay like a champ and was dry the whole way.

Drake and costal, thanks for putting us on some fish. It sure was fun.

Hey Medulla, how'd you do on gas on Sunday? That seemed like a long rough run on 18 gallons. I was a little worried about you having enough to get back.

Remember we voted and it was unanimous, NEITHER of us are going across there again in your boat!

I try to learn something every trip, and one of the main things about this trip was what boats will do what and which one's won't. Medulla has a great boat, but not for big chop! It would be fun in the river though!

Ronnie, I heard that was the first bath you had all year. A certain someone thanked me for having ya'll cross the bay down there, said the ride home would be much more bearable after your bath.
